Andrew Molera State Park

The 4,800-acre park is the largest state park on the Big Sur coast

The drive on California Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast is indisputably one for the bucket list. When you're ready to stretch your legs, pull over at Andrew Molera State Park, 20 miles south of Carmel. Twenty miles of hiking trails wend around redwood groves, meadows and overlooks. Watch for California condors and migrating whales.

ACTIVITIES: Hiking, birding, surfing, picnicking and beachcombing. Bicycling on designated trails. Horseback riding on designated trails.

ACCESSIBLE FEATURES: Restrooms, picnic areas.

DOGS: Except for service animals, dogs are not allowed in Trail Camp, on trails, or at the beach.

What To Pack

  • Safety: We want visitors to enjoy their experience safely. Simple actions can positively increase your outdoor experience. Such actions include taking water and snacks along with you, staying on designated trails, taking breaks, and letting people know where you are going and approximately what time you're coming back.   • What To Bring: Layers of clothing. In the rainy season, pack warm hats, scarves, mittens and plenty of thick, fast-drying socks. And don't forget the raincoats and rain pants. Water, snacks a field guide, binoculars.

  • Visit Andrew Molera State Park or the Ventana Wildlife Society Discovery Center or call the park at (831) 667-2315.
  • A of Jan. 2018, ANDREW MOLERA State Park is open. The seasonal footbridge crossing the Big Sur River has been removed. Hikers must wade across the river to access these open trails: Creamery Meadow Trail, Ridge Trail, Bluffs Trail, Panorama Trail, Spring Trail. Open trails that do not require a river crossing include: River Trail, Bobcat Trail, Twin Cottonwoods Trail, Coyote Flat and Cooper Loop Trail. East Molera Trail is closed until further notice. The campground is closed until further notice.
