Old-growth redwoods await across the Golden Gate

Muir Woods National Monument is a redwood sanctuary near San Francisco with coast redwoods more than 250 feet high and 400 to 800 years old. On a quick trip you might start from the entrance and hike half a mile to Cathedral Grove, which has some of the tallest and oldest trees in the monument.

There is a 1/2 hour loop, a 1 hour loop, and a 1 1/2 hour loop as well as longer hikes on trails that extend into surrounding Mount Tamalpais State Park. All of these walks afford views of old-growth coast redwoods, the tallest living things in the world.
